Cycling on a E-bike boring? Not for pupils and students in the Dutch province of Groningen. They find the E-bike fun, easy and fast, and would like to purchase the electric bike if it would be cheaper to purchase or if attractive funding would be available.
The E-bike is an attractive alternative for traveling by public transport. A pilot project was implemented with 170 pupils and students in the Groningen region. Traveling with the E-bike is not only good for your health, it also helps to relieve the public transport during rush hour. To register the use of the E-bike, a GPS tracking system was deployed. Participants (and their parents) also completed a survey.
The pilot showed that most participants find E-bikes fun, easy and 'fast'. University students also added the aspect of the environment. These advantages make the E-bike an attractive alternative to public transport. The common assumption that an E-bike has a dull image under young peoples has been rejected. The majority of respondents disagreed with the statement "the E-bike is especially interesting for older people or seniors.
However, the (parents of) most participants have not directly purchased an E-bike. Participants of the pilot whish the electric bicycle to be cheaper and / or attractive financing be offered. A lease with a fixed amount per month could help in de decision making in favor of the E-bike. After the pilot participants could purchase an E-bike cheaper. Approximately 10% of pupils in secondary education and 7% of the university students have made use of the offer.
