An electric bicycle without a plug, which recharges itself through solar cells on the front wheel. The first Solar-Bike is a fact, devlopend in de Dutch city of Eindhoven. The bicycle is an idea of Solar Application Lab, and the Eindhoven University of Technology.
" We wanted to design a product that still is a normal bike but solar driven. The solar cells are in the front wheel and loads the power bank at all times; It does not matter how much sunlight there is, "says Marc Peters, founder and owner of the Eindhoven Solar Application.
The solar Bike is now four kilograms heavier than a regular bike, but once offered for sale , designers will have succeeded to make the battery lighter. An electric bicycle without power for many users is a dream and moreover super sustainable: the energy is entirely generated by the bike itself. We have developed a technology that is so effective that it is possible to generate enough energy on small areas."
The technique will be evaluated with ten bikes. The bike is tested in all weather conditions and must be made "vandal-proof". It is estimated that some 10,000 Dutch bikes in 2019 with solar cells in the wheel will be used . The estimated cost will be around 2400 euros, for Solar-bike that contributes to green transport and a battery that lasts longer than a normal e-bike.
